ââ¬Å"Awaking on Friday morning, 20 June 1913, the South African Native found himself, not actually a slave, but a pariah in the land of his birthâ⬠(Gish 18). Desmond Tutu is one of the greatest rabble-rousers for peace that there ever was. He maintains huge political and religious influences even to this day. Most people in South Africa and many more countries hear his voice. His impact on fixing the apartheid system in South Africa was a major one. This apartheid system was very segregated towards whites and blacks in South Africa. Blacks were being forced to move to so-called ââ¬Å"homelands.â⬠The blacks had very little land to live with such many people. These people were being oppressed only because they had a different skin color then whiteâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This act forced black schools to emphasize vocational training and manual labor. In other words, they must train the kids for certain jobs that they will be forced to take when they are older. Desm ond married Leah Shenxane and had four kids: Trevor, Theresa, Naomi, and Mpho. His family still lives to support him to this day. Desmond Tutu has a great religious influence in many, many countries. He became the director of Theological Service for World Council of Churches. His concern was the blacksââ¬â¢ anger towards being oppressed. This issue was not being acknowledged with the importance that it needed to be. The blacksââ¬â¢ anger towards this issue was rising, and many people were not working to help. Tutu trained to become a priest at St. Peterââ¬â¢s Theological College, and he received his Bachelor of Divinity from Kingââ¬â¢s College. Tutu was approached with the opportunity to become the Bishop of Lesotho, and he took it. He held this position from 1976 to 1978. During this time and other times, Tutu focused on equal rights for everybody in South Africa. After this, he was elected the president for All Africa Conference of Churches. He published many collectio ns of speeches, sermons, and other articles he wrote. He has many books out there today. One of the most important positions that Tutu held was the Archbishop of Cape Town. He was the first black to ever hold this position, so this was a big step towards equality for blacks.
